Customs
In order to give as many people an opportunity to order a custom as possible, we maintain a waiting list. Reserving a spot on the custom waitlist allows you to order any of our regular run cast critters, in whatever colours/patterns you like!
There are 3 custom order tiers:
Artistic Liberty
Basic Custom
Complex Custom
All custom order tiers include WIPs.
We do not mix & match designs (eg. ordering a manticore head on a unicorn body etc.)
Can I commission you to make an original doll?
Sorry, we no longer take one-off commissions!
Is your work smoke/allergy free?
Homemade horrors come from a smoke-free home, but we do have pets in our family. We do our best to keep them out of the studio space but because of their presence in the house we cannot guarantee there won't be a stray hair in there somewhere.
Are the materials vegan friendly?
Homemade horrors are vegan friendly, with the exception of a few wool-blend felts. If you are a vegan, please let us know ahead of time so we can ensure any felt used on your monster is acrylic.
Are the materials durable?
Very durable! We've focused on durability in our designs from the start. Our monsters are made with materials and processes that mean you don't have to worry about breakage when enjoying them. They're meant to be played with! We use quality faux fur and thread to ensure seams stay put even under rigorous repositioning. We don't use craft grade paints, or sealants, and our armatures are NOT wire, but a plastic ball and socket joint system that allows for a realistic range of movement and pretty amazing durability. And if anything ever does go wrong under regular use, we'll fix 'em up for you free of charge. Acts of dog however are not covered!
What do you use to sculpt?
Depending on the project, we use either monster clay or a polymer blend.
I want to make my own art doll, can you help me?
While we don't offer tutorials, there are plenty of good ones out there! Your best bet is to look at a variety of different makers, and try a bit of everything on your own to see what works best for you.
Can I make a suggestion for a monster?
Sure! We don't make any promises, but we're always open to ideas, so long as they aren't for copyrighted characters.
Where do you get your _____?
We actually don't have an enormous list of suppliers for various things, as we prefer to support small companies/local business whenever possible. That said, we do order most of our supplies wholesale, or in bulk.
Fur we tend to pick up here in Ontario, unless we need a specific item that needs to be ordered from the US. Online, we've found that fabricempire, fursuit supplies, bigzfabric, and howlfabric are all great to deal with.

There are 3 custom order tiers:
Artistic Liberty
- You choose the cast, we choose the colours/patterns
- You may use 1 simple qualifier
- Does not include changes
- EG: You order a gryphon, "no pastels", and we create a gryphon for you without the use of pastels.
Basic Custom
- You choose the cast, and a basic colour scheme
- Colour scheme may be a photo ie. a sunset, or a simple written description ie. blue & purple with green accents
- EG: You order a highland unicorn, and email us a reference photo that includes a photo of birch trees in sunlight; we create a highland unicorn for you in whites with black striping, with gold accents.
- Includes a max of 2 changes during WIP process
Complex Custom
- You choose the cast, and supply a reference sheet, or a very specific set of colours/patterns
- Can include modifications to pattern
- Can include superficial sculpt modifications (eg. scars)
- Can include airbrushing
- Includes all necessary changes during WIP process

How do I know which tier my custom order would fall into?
If you're in any doubt, please drop Bones an email at [email protected] and she'll help you figure out what tier your order would fall into!
How do I get on the waiting list?
When custom orders are open, a non-refundable deposit secures you a spot in the queue. Your deposit counts toward the total cost of your order.
1) Your deposit can be made by purchasing the custom listing in our shop in your chosen tier (artistic liberty, basic, or complex).
2) Fill out the form linked in the listing.
3) Wait for your confirmation email. Once you’ve received this, you’re in the queue!
So how does it work?
Like any other waiting list really! We go through the queue in an orderly fashion. Once we get to your number, we’ll send you an invoice for either your full, or partial payment as you indicated on your order form. You have 72 hours from this point to pay the invoice, or we’ll skip over you to the next in the queue and come back to you again later. Before your order is activated, you may change you order a max. of twice (eg. if you ordered a squiggle, you may change to a werewolf). After activation, your order cannot be changed.
Once you’ve paid your invoice, we get down to it. WIP shots will be sent at various points during our progress - we often most extras on social media as well.
Upon completion, we will either send off your wee beastie if you’ve paid in full, or send you a second invoice for the remainder of the amount owing plus shipping, and send your critter along once that’s been paid.
You can keep an eye on our progress, as well as your spot in the list via our trello!
Custom Payment
All invoices must be paid within 72 hours. Should your initial invoice remain unpaid for 72 hours from the time of receipt, we will skip to the next person on the list and come back to you as time allows.
In the case of split payments, should your final invoice go unpaid for 72 hours with no email explanation, we reserve the right to consider the project abandoned and resell the custom order in question. That said, if you encounter issues which may prevent you from paying your final invoice, please contact us ahead of time so we can find a solution.
Contact & Communication
To ensure you receive a reply, please email us: [email protected].
Please give us time to respond, taking into account weekends and holidays. If you use twitter/instagram/tumblr/facebook etc., we may not see your question! Occasionally responses require us to do a little research and consult one another, which can take a little more time. Please understand that it may take a day or two.
Because commissions, and some particularly complex customs require a fair amount of back-and-forth via email, its important that you be able to respond to inquiries in a reasonably timely fashion. If we do not receive a response to an email inquiry for 2 weeks, a second email will be sent. If we do not receive a response to the second email in 2 weeks following its receipt, we reserve the right to consider the project abandoned. Abandoned customs may be scrapped, or resold at our discretion, with no refunds.
If you are unable to respond for a lengthy period of time (ex. while on vacation) please let us know ahead of time.
If you do need to get in contact with us regarding your order, please ensure you email with your order number, which appears in the email receipt for your initial deposit.
Care & Repairs
If your monster is looking a little manky, they may need a sponge bath. Furs and painted surfaces can be cleaned gently using warm water and a soft cloth. Do not submerge them, or scrub vigorously with a bristle brush.
If under regular use something happens to go wrong with your cast critter, we do offer repairs. Monsters needing to see a vet can be shipped to us, or dropped off at a convention.
Please note that due to allergies, we're unable to accept critters back for repairs from smoking-households.
Misc.
We do not guarantee a time frame for custom orders, unless previously discussed, as we are dependent upon supply constraints, communication and workload. Please bear in mind, all homemade horror are made by hand down to the last stitch, and paint brush stroke. We take pride in creating art dolls that are both durable, and beautiful, and it does take time.
We reserve the right to cancel any order at any time due to abusive, aggressive behavior or harassment.
